The Rola Platypus Expandable Roof Bag along with the Rola (59504) Cargo Roof Basket proved to be a great combination on my 2008 Chevy Equinox. The problem with the Equinox is the short space between the factory installed roof rack cross bars (only 26 inches). The solution was the Rola Cargo Roof Basket. It was easy to assemble (requiring only a screw driver) and mounted to the vehicle's roof rack without any tools at all. Once the basket was in place, attaching the Platypus bag was a snap...literally. Put the platypus on the basket, open the roof bag all the way, load the roof bag (we had 2 duffle bags, 2 gym/stuff bags, 1 small suitcase and a suit bag), close the roof bag zipper, strap it to the roof basket and pull it tight. Total install time was 15 minutes to put on the basket and about the same to load and secure.
While on the road the Platypus was great. We traveled over 2500 miles round trip from NJ to Southern FL and we found little change in vehicle noise and only a slight decrease in the fuel mileage. Once we arrived we removed the Platypus Roof Bag and left the Basket in place...no problems at all.
We hit some monsoon type rain (summer in Florida, what would you expect) and the Platypus performed just fine. This is not a 'water proof' bag and it states that right in the instructions. By placing the duffle bags and the other contents in plastic garbage bags, everything remained dry, without exception.
One minor thing that I had to do on my own was to purchase caps for the thread ends for the 'U-bolt' mounts so the roof basket didn't puncture the Platypus Bag. I simply used tire valve caps ($2.00 for 8 at Wal-Mart) and they worked perfectly.

This bag is sturdy, holds plenty and attaches securely to a roof rack, but contrary to the advertising, it is most definitely NOT waterproof. We have used it no more than a half-dozen times, but only the last time were we driving in extended, heavy rain. Our luggage and contents therein were soaked and there was a good deal of water pooled inside the carrier when we reached our destination. We'll continue to use it, but everything inside will be in supplemental waterproof bags!

This bag is excellent for the price! High quality - expandable, easy to use and works like a charm! I have a Honda Pilot and it fits the OE roof rack perfectly - can easily be handled by two people to place/remove it from the roof. I would buy this if you are looking for a travel top bag - I compared others in the $150+ range that do not have the quality or performance of this bag.

I bought this cargo bag to go alone with my Rola Vortex roof basket. The material and quality on this bag are great. Solidly built out of sturdy material, just like the basket.
Its easy to connect and holds strong. Which is way the other two reviews are confusing to me. The only way it leaks is if you forget to ZIP it the whole way or somehow not latch it properly.
I've had this bag to Lake Erie in November and in January for steelhead fishing. It holds plenty of gear easily and it's never leaked on me, even in Great Lakes Territory in the winter.
Its nice to be able to throw my muddy waders in the bag at the end of the day and not have to destroy my car's interior.
I guess even the best products don't work if you don't take the time to use them the right way.
I would highly recommend the Rola cargo bag.

I had almost the exact same experience, only it was only rain. But everything was soaked. I followed the instructions, and while the hold downs, extra velcro straps and cinching allow you to really tighten the bag down so you don't have any flapping, if it really was weatherproof as Rola claims, it would be a wonderful product.
